Choose a Waste Hauler
The Township does not have a sanitation department, it is not a service paid for with your taxes nor do we contract with any particular waste hauler for the businesses or residents in the Township at this time. Each household or business is responsible for contracting service as desired.
Most waste haulers have a recycling component as part of their business. Contact your waste hauler for more information. All programs are run by private companies who are not endorsed or controlled by Waterford Township. Please note that the listed recyclables are subject to change.

No Curbside Recycling
Most waste haulers have a recycling component as part of their business. Contact your waste hauler for items collected, how to prepare them and collection schedules.
Township Recycling
On the 1st Saturday of each month, a container is located in front of Township Hall for the collection of Corrugated Cardboard, Magazines, and Paper Board (e.g. cereal boxes, toothpaste boxes, generally most food and personal product packaging. Must be free of food debris and dry.) Collection is from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. If an official holiday falls on the 1st Saturday of the month, collection will not occur and will resume according to the established schedule. Residents Only. No Commercial Haulers Allowed.
CAI Building Recycling
The CAI Building at 5640 Williams Lake Road has a recycle bin at the front west corner of their parking lot to collect newspapers, magazines, catalogs, office paper, shredded paper (bagged) and junk mail. Proceeds are based on paper weight collected per month and allotted to the CAI Building Enhancement Fund for the Golden Age Club.
Additional Recycling Resources
Royal Oak Recycling has now opened a new facility in neighboring White Lake at 10320 Highland Road. They accept tin cans, plastic bottle, jugs, phone books and additional items. Public and businesses are welcome. Contact (248) 387-5555 or Royal Oak Recycling for more information.
Household Hazardous Waste Collection
Waterford Township has rejoined NO HAZ (North Oakland Household Hazardous Waste Consortium) for 2012. NO HAZ provides residents of participating communities a safe and environmentally responsible way to dispose of Household Hazardous Waste (HHW).
Waterford residents MUST receive a voucher PRIOR to attending a collection event. The voucher may be picked up at the Building & Engineering Department in Townhall for $10. Vouchers are limited. First come, first served. If you have any questions, please contact Stacy St. James at 248-674-6240 or sstjames@twp.waterford.mi.us.

Township Compost Site
Please note: The Compost Site closed effective Monday, May 12, 2008.
To Residents of Waterford Township:
In December of 2007 the Michigan Legislature passed and the Governor signed into law Public Act 212 which mandates stringent and costly new requirements relative to the licensing, operation, maintenance and testing of compost disposal sites.
As a result of these new requirements, mandated by Public Act 212, Waterford Township will be forced to suspend receiving branches and yard waste at the Township operated compost site, located on Hospital Road north of Cooley Lake Road, effective Monday May 12, 2008.
Some of the new requirements mandated by Public Act 212 include:
- Limits on the quantity of “yard waste” (which includes grass, leaves and brush less than 2” in diameter) that can be stockpiled at the disposal site.
- Limiting the placement of stockpiles relative to proximity of property lines, wetlands and water courses.
- Recording quantities of materials delivered to and removed from the disposal site.
- Periodic mapping of the disposal site to indicate size and location of stockpiles.
- Continual “turning” of stockpiled materials.
- A three year limit on the time material can be stockpiled on the site before it is removed.
- Grading and drainage facilities to control storm water runoff from the stockpiled materials.
- Monthly testing of stockpiled materials to determine temperature, moisture content and carbon-to-nitrogen ratios.
In an effort to determine the full impact of Public Act 212 I have formed a joint committee consisting of a representative of the Waterford School District (owners of the property where the current compost site is located) as well as the Township’s Attorney, Facilities and Operations Superintendent, Environmental Coordinator and Engineering Director to prepare a study of the feasibility and costs of continuing to operate a compost disposal site in Waterford Township.
